Recurrent miscarriage
Recurrence of miscarriages. Three or more consecutive miscarriages warrant
investigations
Retrograde ejaculation
A condition where semen travels into the bladder instead of penis during
ejaculation. It occurs due to the failure of sphincter muscle at the base of
the bladder. It could be the cause of infertility. A post-ejaculatory urine
sample is requested for diagnosis.
Retroverted uterus
The uterus which is tilted backwards. It occurs in 20% of women. It does not
cause infertility but may occur as a result of PID or endometriosis.
Reversal of sterilization
A surgical procedure performed to reverse sterilization both in women and men.
Although the tubes can be re-joined in 80% of cases, pregnancy does not always
result.. IVF is the preferred technique to reversal procedures to achieve
successful live births. In men sperm can be aspirated from the tubes and used
in ICSI procedure.

Rh Factor
Rhesus Factor. Genetically determined antigen present in red blood cells. It is
tested in pregnancy. Some women develop sensitivity to Rh factor during
pregnancy usually at the time of birth. A pregnant woman who is Rh negative can
develop Rh incompatibility problems if her partner is Rh positive.
RI
Resistance Index. It is a measure of resistance to blood flow used in Doppler
ultrasound examination. High RI values indicate low blood flow
Rubella
German measles infection. A blood test to confirm immunity from the infection is
performed before infertility treatment. If a woman is not immune, she may be
advised to have the vaccination and avoid conception for a couple of months
after vaccination. The infection can cause severe birth defects.
